UU-UNO: LGBTQ Asylum Seeker & Refugee Event

"LGBT Asylum Seekers: Where Do We Go Now?"

Presented by: The Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office and Housing Works, Inc.

October 20th, 12-2pm, 2nd Floor, United Nations Church Center

On October 20th, between 12-2pm, the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office (UU-UNO) will be hosting an LGBTQI Asylum Seeker & Refugee Event at the United Nations Church Center (Address: E 44th St, New York, NY 1007).

The world’s nations are currently evolving in social polarity; where global cultures and governments are becoming either socially liberal or socially conservative. LGBTQI persons in socially conservative areas must flee and seek asylum in order to evade imprisionment just for who they are and whom they love. This event’s objective is to discuss the stories behind LGBTQI asylum and the discrimination of LGBTQI persons in refugee camps.

Panelists will include:

  • Bruce Knotts - Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office
  • Scott Davis - Housing Works, Inc.
  • A Representative from UNHCR
  • Cristina Velez - Immigration Equality, HIV Law Project, Inc.
  • LGBT Asylum Seekers & Asylees

Please email your RSVP, questions or concerns to unitern@uua.org with "ATTN: LGBT Asylum Event (Oct 20)" in the subject line by October 19th. Also, please spread the word to your family, friends, colleagues, and any LGBTQI asylum seekers and refugees you know. (The event will be open to the public!)
