AsylumConnect Condemns Trump Admin's New "Catch and Return" Policy

STATEMENT: AsylumConnect Reacts to Latest Asylum Policy

December 21, 2018 - On December 20th, the Trump administration announced its latest attack on the U.S. asylum system. The new policy, called “Migration Protection Protocols,” will begin to require people who seek asylum at the southwest border to wait in Mexico while the U.S. immigration courts decide their asylum cases.

This policy blatantly overlooks the needs of LGBTQ asylum seekers. LGBTQ asylum seekers are not safe in Mexico, and must be allowed to remain in the U.S. during the lengthy asylum process. This new policy is illegal, immoral and incredibly dangerous for LGBTQ Central Americans seeking safety.

We strongly urge the Trump administration to discontinue this harmful policy. If the administration does push forward with implementing this policy, we call on the administration to immediately grant an exemption for LGBTQ asylum seekers at the southwest border due their clear "credible fear" of remaining in Mexico while their asylum cases are decided in the U.S.

This policy is illegal and threatens the lives of thousands of persecuted LGBTQ people. At AsylumConnect, we will make every effort to ensure our lifesaving technology reaches all LGBTQ asylum seekers, including those who are forced to remain in Mexico during the U.S. asylum process.
