#ProudTogether-What does LGBTQ pride mean to you?

In honor of Pride month, we're proud to announce #ProudTogether. AsylumConnect is proud to share our team’s candid thoughts on LGBTQ pride and welcoming LGBTQ asylum seekers to America.

This week, we asked our AslyumConnect team, “What does LGBTQ Pride mean to you?”

Katie-Co-Founder & President For me, LGBTQ Pride Month represents a long awaited celebration of visibility and authenticity. When I wave my rainbow flag, I think about how long it took me to reach that moment and how many people are still not afforded the basic human right to be themselves. Pride Month motivates me to be proud of who I am and to fight for others' right to live authentically.

Hans-Vice President Celebrating Pride means I can finally be free and safe to celebrate my own identity as a gay man without fear of persecution. It allows me to feel confident and open about my sexuality, knowing that I am surrounded by people who will not harass me for being gay. Pride also reminds me that despite the progress we have made in America, there are many people in other countries who are still living in the closet due to anti-LGBTQ laws and attitudes. I dream that someday, Pride will be celebrated in every country in the world.

Gisela-Senior Director of Data Management PRIDE to me is a reminder that people of different sexual preference and gender variance are the same as us. Their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights should be promoted no less than ours. It is also a reminder that we are far from what we would like their situation to be so we can all contribute to make a difference.

Kay-Senior Director of Partnerships Pride is leaving everyone in awe of your authentic self. It is pushing forward knowing every step you take smooths the path for those behind you. It is the ability to choose your family, to strengthen ties with those that support and encourage you, and to give that support back openly and freely. Pride is raw, and real, and contagious.
